Devagi Sanmugam
With a string of accolades that is as eclectic
and imaginative as her recipes - cookbook author, food columnist,
cooking instructor, entrepreneur and professional bon vivant - Chef
Devagi Sanmugam, is one of Singapore's most dynamic and talented
food personalities. Whether she is concocting recipes for her latest
project or conducting cooking classes for budding chefs, her contagious
enthusiasm transforms ordinary meals into dining adventures.
Devagi Sanmugam's career began 27 years ago in her kitchen, as a
cooking instructor with a penchant for whipping up recipes. Her
unique approach to cooking and her flair for creating recipes that
cut across a range of cuisines quickly endeared her to a loyal following.
Not looking back since, she has been at the forefront of Singapore's
burgeoning culinary scene.
Known widely today as the 'Spice Queen' of Singapore, Chef
Devagi has also proven to be an inspiring cookbook author with 17
cookbooks under her belt - The South Indian Cookbook, Great Bakes
No Eggs, North Indian Cooking, Sambals, Dips and Marinades and Naturally
Speaking - Indian Recipes and Home Remedies and several others as
listed below. She has also co-authored Cooking with Asian Leaves,
Cooking with Asian Roots and Fun with Asian Food. Her recipes and
articles have been and are being featured in several magazines and
newspapers like the popular Lifestyle Magazine.
Unceremoniously thrust into the international food show circuit,
Devagi Sanmugam has also appeared on TV cooking programmes in the
UK, Australia, US, India, Japan, and on numerous radio stations
all over the world. Over the years, she has conducted cooking workshops
in San Francisco, Texas, Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Colombo and
most recently Sweden; where she taught chefs from all over Europe
the finer points of Asian cuisine.
In Singapore, Devagi appeared in an English 13-episode CHEF ON CALL
cooking program on Mediaworks Channel and Enna Suvai Enna Ragasiyam
and Aasai Aasaiyai Cooking For Love, Tamil cooking programs on Vasantham
Central for a total of 26 episodes. From September 2005 Chef Devagi
was the Resident Chef of the Asian Food Channel, a 24-hour
food channel. Devagi was also the consultant for a Malay cooking
show on Suria Channel Soo
Lazat
which won the Pesta Perdana 2007s Best Info-Ed Program Award!
She had also been interviewed on many other info-ed and cooking
programs.
An accomplished authority on the local food scene, she is constantly
involved in developing and testing original recipes and formulas
for food companies and restaurants. Devagi continues to provide
educational experiences through lectures and demonstrations at her
Epicurean World Cooking School and to country clubs, recreational
associations, schools and corporate bodies. She has also organized
and judged cooking competitions and participated in Singapore Food
Festival Events, Singapore Heritage Festival and many other events.
From July 2005 to July 2006, Devagi was also Culinary Consultant
for NTUC Fairprice supermarkets chain.
She donates her time occasionally to community services too. At
the beginning of January 2005, Devagi flew down to India on her
own initiative and cooked for over 2000 Tsunami victims daily for
10 days.
Chef Devagi is also the Managing Director of Devagi's Epicurean
World Pte Ltd.
